"Los ciegos no son otros sino nosotros". Esa frase es el resultado de un ejercicio escolar para buscar un eslogan sobre los ciegos. Es de Marta, 9 años, creo, y me ha llegado al alma. Para mí, que soy hijo de ciegos, significa casi exactamente lo que me ha tocado vivir: multitud de miradas idiotas de quienes se cruzan con un bicho raro. Mi padre y yo caminábamos cogidos del brazo, como es natural, y me he cansado de observar cómo el prójimo nos miraba casi invariablemente con cara de gilipollas. Como si fuese poco desgañitarse en una esquina hiciese frío o calor, expuesto a la caridad conmiserativa de unos o al abuso enervante de otros. Para los primeros: no, no éramos mendigos. Para los segundos: mi padre casi mata a uno que pudo enganchar. No digo más.

Supongo que la idea de buscar un eslogan parte de la ONCE, que las campañitas publicitarias que se ha gastado cuestan un riñón de la cara. Qué miserables pueden llegar a ser, ni una maldita residencia para ciegos se han dignado habilitar. Un anciano ciego necesita otra clase de atención de la que le puede proporcionar una residencia de las existentes. Necesita estar con otros ciegos y la ONCE obvia esa necesidad al carecer de un lugar adecuado para sus afiliados. Será que más de cuarenta años de calle y penurias no lo merecen.
